High street retailer Wilkinson is using two-way radios to improve communications between shunting vehicle drivers and dispatchers at its two national distribution centres. The centres distribute goods to 290 stores, delivering up to two million items a day and handling 40,000 product lines.
The radios boost the productivity levels of the fleet by increasing managers' awareness of the shunters' whereabouts. "Radio communications reduce our downtime and keep our team better informed — allowing us to operate in a more efficient manner," explains Kevin Coe, senior engineering manager. As well as increasing productivity, radio communication devices make us quicker and smarter when it comes to safety." The radios have been hard-wired into the vehicles to reduce the number of batteries required and the time spent changing batteries.
