)r Shirley Summerskill, Jer-Secretary at the me Office, outlined two 7s in which existing rules e being altered when she wered a short debate on cks on London Trans staff.
he said that London nsport had 300 buses .d with two-way radios, the intention was to e 1,000 equipped by the of the year. Bus operators had been advised that part of the cost of installation could be met by grant.
One difficulty was that the public service regulations did not at present permit bus drivers to speak by radio when their vehicles were in motion, noted Dr Summerskill.
The Department of the Environment was drafting regulations to overcome this problem – there was nothing to prevent their installation or use while stationary. Outlining possible alarm systems, Dr Summerskill said a provisional decision had been made in favour of an alarm system which flashed the lights and sounded the horn intermittently and more loudly.
London Transport had already equipped some of its fleet with a form of this system on an experimental basis.
Amending regulations were being prepared by Environment as a matter of urgency.
