CHANGES to the British Leyland Mastiff and Super Mastiff series include the fitting of a Perkins V8 540 engine in place of the V8 510 previously fitted.
The power output of 127kW (170bhp) is the same as the AA version of the original 510 but as this is developed 200rpm lower, at
2,600 rpm, the torque is correspondingly increased to 555Nm (410 lb ft) at 1700 rpm. The power output of the standard V8 510 was 112kW (150bhp).
With the 510 AA it was impossible to fit the spare wheel and carrier on "petroleum regulation" vehicles because of the size of the silencer. With the 540 this problem does not occur and either front or rearmounted exhaust systems may be specified.
The new engine is claimed to meet the expected smoke and noise legislation of the "Production Conformity to BS AU 141a" whereby the production engines are re
quired to meet the stE as well as the samp unit.
