Audrey Phillips is one of four HGV drivers the family firm M and S Transport, based in SoIva near Haverfordwest. "I thought it would be useful to have my Class 1" says Phillips, who passed first time after receiving instruction from Davies.
Phillips' husband, Stephen, and fatherin-law Meurig Harries own the general haulage firm, which also carries out some of long distance and livestock work. Phillips, who runs of the transport office, now goes out on rush jobs with other drivers so that they can get there without breaking the hours regulations.
She drives an ERF tractive unit with a 12.2m trailer and says that the dimensions took some getting used to. Reversing was what she initially found most difficult. But she has always enjoyed driving and had no qualms about moving up from a car.
"I've got two small children who I've got to think about, I wouldn't want to be out on the road all the time," explains Phillips. "But now I've got my licence I can be there when I'm needed.
