THE GOVERNMENT has launched a study into the wider implications of the use of biofuels. This will help to develop the UK and EU's policies on the use of biofuels, according to Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly.
On 15 April, the Renewable Ilansport Fuel Obligation comes into force, which will require all forecourts to ensure 2.5% of the fuel they sell is biofuel. Kelly says that any further biofuel targets must take into account the latest scientific evidence about the environmental effects of biofuel production.
"[The UK government] is not prepared to go beyond the current target levels for biofuel [use] until we're satisfied it can be done sustainably," she adds.
