INDIVIDUALS or teams of up to four people engaged in commercial vehicle production are among those who have a chance to win 110,000 in the second manufacturing effectiveness competition sponsored by Willis Faber, insurance brokers, and organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. The aim is to discover the most notable improvement in engineering manufacturing techniques. The Prime Minister has given the competition her enthusiastic support.
The first award in 1982 went to a team from Dunlop Sports for significant developments in the manufacture of carbon fibre tennis rackets. One of these brat-bats was used decisively by John McEnroe at Wimbledon but the competition cannot be blamed for that.
