THERE is no disputing the fact that the usual rule-of-thumb methods of testing sparking plugs give a most uncertain indication of the condition of
the plug. A handy device has now been produced by Bosch, Ltd., Larden Road, Acton, London, W.3, which affords a means for examining the behaviour of the plug under a pressure equivalent to that normally existing in the combustion chamber prior to the explosion.
The Plug-o-meter, as the device is called, incorporates an air pump, a pressure gauge, a safety gap and the necessary windows. It is suitable for plugs haying metric or American threads, and these can be inserted into their sockets without the use of a spanner, a soft rubber washer being provided to make a gas-tight joint. Used in conjunction with a six-volt battery it enables plugs to be tested at 10,000 volts under eight atmospheres pressure.
