A NEW design for drive couplings between the Gardner engine and gearbox in the Fleetline bus has been produced by Silentbloc of Crawley.
It comprises half-couplings and a series of bonded rubberto-metal sub-assemblies connecting the driving and driven flanges. It allows for changes in alignment between engine and gearbox which can occur after the bus has been in service and the engine mountings have settled.
SilentbIoc was approached by fleet users, including London Transport, who were looking for improvements to the standard design. The coupling offers the advantage that if one of the bonded components should fail, the assembly will still function and a replacement can be fitted without dismantling the coupling.
