BITUMEN is heated by oil burners and a heat-exchange system in a 22,700 litre (5,000gal) tanker semi-trailer built by Whale Tankers Ltd for use in Dubai.
The heating system is designed to heat loads which have cooled in transit and must be discharged at a terminal where there is no heat source.
Heat is transferred to the load by two large-diameter tubes running twice the length of the tank and discharging from a flue on top of the tank at the rear. The intake and burners are sited low down in the dished rear end of the tank.
