Transport nostalgia is becoming big business and the Transport Trust, whose patron is the Duke of Edinburgh, is doing its best to stimulate interest in Britain's transport heritage. Jude Garvey, its director, says that nearly 20 million visits were made last year to steam railway centres, air displays, transport museums, veteran and vintage car rallies, and waterway and coastal craft exhibitions, The Trust hopes for a 10 per cent increase in visits this year, but it is too early to say whether that aim will be achieved. With the growing trend towards holidays at home, an increase in visits may certainly be expected.
The Trust's Travel Back 1978 scheme gives reduced or free admission to more than 80 exhibition centres for £5 for the full season. It is being well supported. The subscription includes a quarterly magazine and a guide to transport museums. Anyone who wants to sign up can do so at 8-9 Stephen Mews, London W1P 1PP.
