TYRES should cost more according to Derek Walters, the UK marketing manager of Pirelli. Mr Walters told CM this week in Milan that because tyres had contributed greatly to containing operators' maintenance costs they were in his view under-priced.
He said: "I suggest we are not charging enough for this product." Mr Walters was speaking at a press conference and said that before long Britain's heavy commercial vehicles, those with 20 in. and 22.5 in. diameter wheels will be running almost exclusively on radial ply tyres by 1983.
And he estimated that 66 per cent of all the radials bought by heavy vehicle manufacturers would be in tubeless form.
According to Mr Walters the tubeless radial is fast becoming recognised in the vehicle manufacturing sector. While he considered that light vehicles would also move towards the radial, they would do so much more slowly than heavy commercial vehicles.
