ARVINMERITOR CVS is to close its trailer axle and suspension plant near Wrexham. Nearly 200 jobs are threatened; a 90-day redundancy consultation process has started with staff and their representatives.
The union Amicus was due to meet management as CM went to press. No-one from Arvin Mentor was available to add to the company's statement on Friday 22 July. which blames the "undesirable and difficult position" on the "business need to more closely align [ArvinMeritor] to the needs of our current and future customers".
The plant is expected to he closed by December 2006. The timing of the announcement, on the eve of the summer holiday shutdown, has been criticised by local MP Ian Lucas, who is reported to have been told of the situation in a one-line letter on Friday.
The plant on the Llay industrial estate assembles trailer axles and suspensions, including components imported from Brazil. Arvin Mentor is looking at several alternative sites to take over Wrexham's production.
So far the firm's brake plant at Cwmbran in South Wales is emerging as a favourite.
The firm is believed to have been a major victim of the Crane Fruehauf crisis earlier this year.
