As sure as the first swallow, summer is heralded by the annual migration of municipal equipment buyers to their seaside sojourn at Torbay. Factor 20 at the ready, Colin Barnett followed them.
There was a time, not too long ago, when the Chartered Institute of Wastes Management's annual seafront exhibition was a major shop window for the latest crop of municipal vehicles. But only four truck chassis and two van manufacturers made the trek south for the 2007 show.
Instead of the usual four greens only two were used.with the emphasis turning to smaller indoor booths promoting specialist services, as well as the exhibition's traditional conference programme.
With increasing competition, especially from the NEC CV Show's new municipal section, there's a question mark over how long CIWM can survive as a truck showcase.
