FRENCH lorry drivers blockaded maior roads in and around Paris last week in a protest at fuel charges. The union of small transporters wants a 50 per cent reduction in the price of fuel, the realization of funds set aside for the relief of the economic difficulties of small hauliers and interim loans to help them update their equipment.
The drivers have pre viously established barricades on the same roads in February and also sealed the Al autoroute that runs north from Paris to Le Bourget and Charles De Gaulle airports, Lille and Brussels. On one occasion the blockade was not lifted until midnight and rush-hour commuters did not get home until the early hours of the next morning.
