by a political correspondent • It is now clear that the Minister for Transport Industries, Mr John Peyton, has no plans for major transport legislation— though of course road transport will feel the effects of environmental legislation. So far as his sector is concerned, the only request for Parliamentary time is likely to be for a few "tidying-up" measures, in particular a rationalization and easing of the laws affecting goods vehicle driving hours.
The Minister has yet to make up his mind about permitting younger drivers to take the wheel of hgv. He is known to be very sympathetic to the industry's pleas, and recognizes the importance of offering a career structure to attract and keep good quality youngsters, but he is still concerned about the safety risk. It seems likely that a graded scheme as advanced by the FTA may be permitted, with the safeguards recently suggested by the Minister and published in CM.
