THE SOUTH WEST is pressing the Government to build and improve roads in the region.
SWORD—the South Western Organisation for Road Development—is seeking, in particular, firm commitments to road schemes linking the South West with the rest of Britain.
The new organisation is asking for A38 Plymouth to Bodmin, A30 Exeter to Launceston road, the North Devon link and a spine road from Bristol to Southampton to be built.
Under its chairman, Col S. Maynard Lovell, the group is launching a crusade to get the roads built and it will be acting as a sounding board for discussion and argument which it hopes will help to form sound transport policies for the South West.
SWORD is aiming to stir up public opinion and prod the Government into action on what it calls "the legacy of traffic congestion and neglected roads in the South West."
It is also looking for a more effective network of feeder routes to link up with the rest of Britain.
