TRUCKS over 3 tons are banned from using the centre of Beverley, Yorkshire at any time—except for calls.
The order by Humberside County Council came into effect last week after talks with the trade associations. It is backed up by penalties of up to a E100 fine for ignoring the order.
The banned area is marked with signs bearing the words "3 tons" and direction signs show drivers the routes which heavy goods vehicles may still use.
The county council says that the ban is to prevent damage to the historic buildings in the town centre. Drivers making deliveries within the restricted area must take the shortest route between the perimeter roads and their destination.
