PROPOSALS to impose an 8tonne weight restriction and an 8ft width restriction on vehicles on the Island of Mill have come in for criticism from the Freight Transport Association.
The FTA says that the plan, put forward by the Strathclyde Regional Council, will mean increases in the prices of all essential goods as well as restricting certain social services.
Fuel oil, at present transported in 2,000-gallon tankers, will be one of the hardest hit commodities on the island. The new rules would mean deliveries of around 400 gallons: "making deliveries totally uneconomic," says the FTA.
"There is no great volume of excessively large vehicles currently using the island's roads. If small vehicles have to be used transport costs could become excessive," it says.
FTA also points out that cattle floats, dustcarts, fire engines, and other district council vehicles would be banned by the new rules.
