worsening driver shortage by taking on unqualified 'drivers and paying for their training up to Class 1 level. Transport Training Services will recoup its investment by placing the new drivers with participating companies for a sixmonth spell at £5.50 (ex-VAT) an hour for a minimum 40 hours a week.
The drivers will receive a 0.50 hourly rate during the placement, after which they will be free to negotiate independent contracts or move on.
Paul Wilkinson of ITS says: "We are now looking for companies to register their vacancies with us, as without their help the scheme will be unsuccessful."
