preparing to pitch for business in Euros instead of punts from 1 January when the currency is launched. National currencies will operate alongside the new money until the Euro takes over completely in 2002—but Irish businessmen are pitching for an earlier changeover. The Irish Business and Employers Confederation has issued guidelines for an early transition to Euros. Hauliers may be asked to quote and accept payment in Euros very soon. Irish trucking spokesman Jimmy Quinn says: "It's not a huge problem to adapt to Euro billing if you have a multi-currency system on your computer already." The change to a common European currency will help hauliers who have to supply drivers with running money in many different currencies. The cost of fuel for international operators should also decrease.
Credit card companies are expected to offer Euroonly billing to truckers—a change which will avoid costly currency conversions and thus save fuel costs.
