THE SYNOVATE RETAIL Traffic Index (RTI) figures for April 2009 show the strongest year-on-year rise in retail footfall for more than five years since February 2004.
Retail footfall levels were up markedly by 4.4% on April 2008 and by 7.6% month on month against March 2009.
The figures have been buoyed by clement weather and consumers staying at home for spring breaks rather than going on holiday.
The retail think-tank says the results should be seen in the light of "bouncing along the bottom" of the downturn rather than as indicators of an imminent recovery.
Syriovate (www.synovate.com) predicts a 2.7% drop in customer numbers in May compared with last year, however.
