THE PROFESSIONAL Drivers Association (PDA) claims drivers are enraged by comments from a truck park boss who suggested drivers prove where they have parked in order to clear lay-bys.
Orwell Lorry Park owner Karl Rout says building new lorry parks will only solve half the problem of HGVs parking on industrial estates and at the side of roads at night, because drivers are pocketing the money (CM 16 April).
The PDA's Pat Nicholson says lorry drivers are paying out of their own pocket for secure overnight parking and, with wage reductions due to the recession, have no choice hut to park elsewhere.
"More drivers are sleeping in lay-bys. They eat at places like Karl's and then pull out and park elsewhere. Businesses are not paying at all," she adds.
In an email to Rout. Nicholson says "I've been surprised at how many have heard this and refuse to visit the truckstop in view of this': Rout says: "At a recent SETPOS [European secure parking initiative] meeting, we were told lorry drivers are given 'night out' money for their security, their dignity and their wellbeing at night," he says. "The way we understand it is that is money for lorr3,, parking."
