• A Dudley owner-driver has been banned from holding an WV licence for 10 years after obtaining one through deception while already disqualified from driving. He was also barred from holding an Operator's Licence or being involved in the management of a haulage business for five years.
Paul Garrett of Marriott Road, Netherton, Dudley, failed to appear at a Birmingham disciplinary inquiry. West Midland Deputy Traffic Commissioner Roger Seymour said that Garrett had written to say that the days of the owner-driver were numbered and he did not propose to fight for his 0licence.
all his drinking and driving offences occurred when he was just over the limit. Seymour said that Garrett had also stated that he had driven under an alias to try and earn a living, without realising how serious the offence was until he was charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice.
Garrett had been convicted of drinking and driving and dangerous driving in May, ordered to do 100 hours of community service and put on probation for a year, said Seymour. He added that Garrett had appeared at a public inquiry in September 1993 as Paul Gardner, where he claimed he had no other convictions_ In fact he had previously been found guilty of another drinking and driving offence in the name of Garrett.
