DURING THE PAST few years, I had the privilege to meet with Ron Webb, general secretary of the Unite union, on several occasions. Each time it has been in relation to businesses lost to the industry.
Finding out that Ron is planning to retire (CM 16 September). saddens me.
For a small-time road haulage operator like myself, to have the opportunity to sit with this person and discuss industry issues that adversely affect us is one that I will never forget.
Ron has always listened and given advice. I trust that Ron's successor will be of a similar ilk.
It is rumoured there could be trouble on the eastern front from the tanker drivers shortly.
Personally. I would say that if a strike by tanker drivers were to take place, then both trade associations and the industry should take this opportunity to hammer home for a rebate in fuel duty for users of commercial vehicles.
I would strongly urge the road transport industry to support the tanker drivers, given their support for fuel duty protests in previous years.
