• The independent research group Incomes Data Service reports this week that the road haulage industry will need 30,000 to 35,000 more hgv drivers in the next two years to cope with anticipated increases in demand. This is in addition to the shortage of 50,000 drivers which the industry requires at the moment and does not take into account the effect of the introduction of the EEC 8hr driving day, which comes into force in 1976. The IDS report says that the upturn in the economy is the main cause of the shortage, but comments on the high failure rate in the hgv driving test which in 1972 was 43 per cent.
