• The first municipal driving centre opened by the London Borough of Harrow on Monday could be used for instructing drivers of commercial vehicles later in its development.
Built at a cost of £.92,000, the centre is to be used initially to teach school children in the borough and adult learnerdrivers to drive safely. As well, other drivers will be taught advanced driving techniaues such as Continental driving and caravan towing.
The present road surface is not suitable for heavy commercial vehicles though it could well take light vans. The council has already considered undertaking the instruction of commercial vehicle drivers but felt that this should be postponed till the centre had been in operation for a time.
The present 6;--acre site is laid out with a network of roadways, intersections, traffic lights and pedestrian crossings to simulate actual road conditions. There are also driving simulators on which pupils can gain confidence before practical instruction.
