• French hauliers are to push up the price of their domestic haulage by 10%, directly affecting British firms operating with cabotage licences over the Channel.
The minimum haulage rate in France is fixed by an agreement between the four main haulage associations and the Government.
This is one reason why French haulage is more expensive than British.
The latest price rise is put down to increasing costs, partly the result of rising diesel prices and a new French law which insists drivers are paid by the hour rather than monthly.
Pierre Fournier, the UK manager of French operator Euroyenture Continental, a subsidiary of TFE, says: "The rate fixing is the chief reason why domestic haulage costs more in France. The reason that international haulage costs more is the
strength of 1 the franc. Of course, when we operate over here
(in the UK)we have to accept that the rates are lower."
