This Mercedes-Benz Mobile Eye Unit is said to be the first mobile phaco-microsurgical eye unit in the world. It was shipped out to India in August where it is expected to help five million cataract sufferers. When it is fully equipped its first base will be in the northern state of Madrya Pradesh.
The surgical unit, with its Puma-cum-Thermo King air-conditioning system, will provide facilities for an estimated 15,000 keyhole operations a year. As well as two operating theatres, the unit houses an examination and treatment area that link up with a 40ft marquee capable of accommodating 60 patients a day.
The side-mounted Thermo King VM305 fridge unit will regulate temperatures inside at a cool 21°C while outside temperatures soar to 41°C. Now that's what I call a scorcher!
The project co-ordinator is renowned eye surgeon Professor Eric Arnott, who reports that although the eye unit is virtually complete it is still in need of interior fixtures and fittings
such as operating tables, microscopes, surgical instruments and sterilisation equipment.
