• Gateshead-based CPS Haulage is diversifying into bus operation this autumn, with a subsidiary called Welcome Passenger Services.
WPS, also based at Gateshead, will be managed by three former Tyne & Wear Omnibus Company employees, James Bradley, Hazel Meikle and Harry Stewart. They left TWOC after it was taken over by Busways Travel in November 1989, and have been known to have wanted to set up a bus firm.
Welcome is expected to start operating by November with a licence for 30 vehicles. It has already ordered 10 new longwheelbase Optare Metroriders and 10 new Reeve Burgessbodied Renault S75s.
The managing director of CPS, Chris Wallace, will not reveal details of its routes, but Busways and Go-Ahead Northern are already on the defensive.
