• Half of Britain's motorists have driven faster than 80mph in the past year, and one in seven has broken the 90mph mark, according to a Gallup poll in the Daily Telegraph.
The survey was carried out in the same week as Commercial Moto's poll on hauliers' attitudes to the EC's proposed 50mph limit for trucks (see lead story). It reveals that road tolls have some support among motorists: 47% think it would be a good idea to charge vehicles using roads in busy city centres.
Hauliers and drivers may be used to using kilometres for maintenance intervals and tacho charts, but only 31% of respondents to the Telegraph poll favour changing road signs to metric.
Only 17% of motorists want Britain to move to driving on the right — the cost of changing to the Continental system would be in the billions of pounds.
