• The upgrading of the A13 Thames Gateway, which goes around East London and the Docklands, is likely to include a number of lorry/bus-only routes as part of a Government plan to curb car traffic.
Companies are currently being invited to tender for the design, build, finance and operate (DBFO) contract to maintain the route.
They will receive cash for every truck and bus that uses it—but not for cars.
Roads Minister Baroness Hayman says the Government wants to see the private sector "take an active role in road management".
The contract is expected to be awarded in the summer.
