Commercial Motor takes road haulage very seriously. However, once a week our quirky corre
spondent, hi. steps off his perch to take a humorous look at the industry to keep us all sane. If you have any off-beat yams that illustrate the stranger, or sillier, side of the business, he'd like to hear from you. As a softhearted old bird, he's also happy to publicise charitable works— and is always interested in events for the vintage vehicles he drove as a fledgling. Drop the Hawk a line at Commercial Motor, Bird's Eye View, Rm H203, Quadrant House. The Quadrant Sutton, Surrey SM2 SAS, or fax him on 0181 652 8969.
Simple but effective
Ei he Hawk was impressed with a scheme dreamt up by the chaps at the Highways Agency. On a busy section of the A63 into Hull, they have introduced standby recovery vehicles over five miles of road to cover busy periods during the winter months. The scheme is operated by Welpton Recovery Services of Hessle, Hull. Highways Agency area manager John Bagley says: "By quickly clearing the carriageway of obstructions it will save time, cut down on delays and frayed tempers, and make the road safer." The best ideas are always the simplest and the results show break downs and incidents have been cleared within minutes ensuring free flowing traffic. The bonus is a saving of up to £20,000 a day in delay costs. Excellent! Now why didn't they think of that before?
