Cleansing Superintendent's Comparison with Horse Transport and Manual Labour.
IN VIEW of the interest taken in the removal of refuse by electric wagons as compared with horse-drawn wagons, the-cleansing,' superintendeut of the Blackpool Corporation (Mr. James Bee) has had a comparative statement prepared, showing' the cost of a week's work carried out by each type. From the figures which follow it will he observed that the refuse can be removed by electric wagons at about 3s. per ton less than by horses.

-following, additional motor vehicles :— One gully-emptying machine, one Laffly motor road-sweeping machine, one small-type Karrier sweeping and collecting machine; two electric refuse wagons, and two petrol' motor wagons for collecting fish, refuse and street sweepings.
Both the Laffly and Karrier motor sweeping "machines now in seri-ice have rendered excellent assistance in the work of street cleansing, when conditions have made it possible for them to be employed with advantage. During the year the Laffly machine was at work for 685 hours sweeping, and 147 hours assisting in washing streets. The cost of street sweeping by means of this machine works out at about 68. per 1,000 sq. yards.
