Tam tired of listening to hauliers saying all their troubles would be over if VED was scrapped and replaced by extra fuel tax. Do they think that any government is going to drastically reduce the income it receives from each truck on the road?
One result would be more trucks on the road. At present operators take trucks off the road if they are not working almost full time. With no large VED bill to pay it would not matter if a truck worked only one day a week.
What about diesel cars? A typical artic uses five times more fuel than a diesel car but its current VED rate is up to 40 times greater. How do we square that circle?
The present system means at least that once a year the name and address of every taxed vehicle's owner is recorded and MoT and insurance certificates are checked. The cowboys would love a system which does away with all that, wouldn't they?
