• Metered smoke tests for dieselengined vehicles under 3.5 tonnes are likely to be reintroduced into the MoT test early next year.
The DOT suspended the test in mid-February following warnings from the Freight Transport Association that the test could damage some engines.
It was hoped the test could be reintroduced in the autumn, but the DOT is still awaiting results of Vehicle Inspectorate research.
The basic method of the test, of free acceleration, cannot change, but the procedure will.
The maximum number of tests will be reduced from 10 to six with an average of the last four being taken as the final result.
