• Up to 20,000 workers in the milk industry are to be balloted for industrial action next month after twice rejecting an across-theboard pay offer of 1.8% on basic wages.
The three unions representing the dairy transport drivers and the distribution and manufacturing workers are meeting on 11 August to agree the questions to be asked on the ballot papers.
The ballot will take place next month or in September. About 400 drivers at seven Exel Newsflow depots have voted 80% in favour of all-out strike action.
The dispute is over a new rostering system of five days on, two off. This was intended to trim .C1 m a year from a renewal of Exel's contract to deliver Express Newspapers, according to one driver—Exel declines to comment. Relations between management and drivers is at an all-time low, says the driver.
