• Drivers in Scotland will have to wait more than three years before the pressure is eased on a blackspot that has been the site of almost 300 accidents in the past 10 years.
The dual-carriageway which is planned for the A92 between Dundee and Arbroath will not be completed until 2003, councillors from Angus and Dundee have confirmed.
The news comes in the same week that the road claimed the lives of four people who were travelling to a funeral. And last September four workmen were killed when their car burst into flames after being crushed by a 36-tonne artic carrying grain.
That accident happened less than half a rille from last week's crash.
Between 1987 and 1997 there were 252 accidents on the short stretch of road, causing 15 fatalities and 82 serious injuries.
The dual-carriageway is being funded by a private finance initiative, but even this fast-track financing will not lead to an early completion.
"Regrettably this is going to be a fairly lengthy process because we have statutory procedures we must go
through," says Angus councillor Sandy West. "We are proceeding as quickly as we can—but not quickly enough to prevent tragedies like the one last week."
