SUPERMARKET Sainsbury's has taken more than one million vehicle kilometres off the roads in the past year due to more efficient use of its own and suppliers' fleets.
In addition, It has cut the amount of CO2 produced per 1,000 cases transported by 16% over the past five years and by 6.4% year-on-year and has already met its 2012 target.
The data is contained within the firm's Corporate Responsibility Report 2010, which includes the company's logistics operations within its remit.
It says driver training, the introduction of double-deck trailers and supply chain realignment ensuring the right stores are connected to the right depots have all helped cut its carbon footprint. It also cites the implementation of its Integrated Transport Management System. as another key step.
It adds: -In our primary operations this year, we are more effectively using empty trucks that pick up produce from suppliers en-route back from store deliveries.
"By using both our own and suppliers' fleets more efficiently, we have delivered a reduction of around 1,174,046 vehicle kilometres this year."
The introduction of 70 electric vans into its home-delivery operation has further cut 002 emissions, the report adds.
