• Uckfield-based timber distributor Hackman Woodpax has taken delivery of two Mercedes-Benz 1625s fitted with a lifting single wheel, third axle. The unusual third axle raises the payload of the truck to 23 tonnes and allows it to pull a drawbar trailer with a payload of 9.5 tonnes.
At these weights, the drawbar combination commands a lower VED charge than a conventional unit operating with two wheels on the lifting third axle. The conversions were undertaken by Wheelbase Engineering in conjunction with Mercedes, and the vehicles were supplied to Woodpax by Pandahire on a contract hire deal which includes a 38-tonne Mercedes-Benz SK tractive unit.
