• Up to 700 people face redundancy at United Carriers following the firm's decision to close eight UK depots to streamline operations.
The company hopes to offer up to 200 jobs elsewhere in the group. A spokesman explains: "When we put our three parcel firms under the UC banner last year we were still operating with two networks. We are closing duplicate sites and now we will operate with a single network."
From 31 July United Carriers also intends to dedicate its operations to its premium services: Next Day, Sovereign 48-hour and Sterling three-day.
