• CRANE FRUEHAUF's new central parts distribution warehouse at Dereham, Norfolk, providing replacement parts for its national network of 12 branches was officially opened by Roads and Traffic Minister Peter Bottomley.
The company is the UK's largest manufacturer of trailers and semi-trailers with some 30% market share. The warehouse comprises the latest stage in Crane Fruehauf s investment programme and with additonal manufacturing facilities also now on stream cost 21.25 million.
Through its network of a dozen branches it operates a fleet of fuly stocked parts vans providing workshops with a regular service and an emergency 24-hour facility.
The branches have direct computer links to the new warehouse allowing speedy and cost efficient ordering from the million items in stock.
The new development adds 4,400m (47,000sq ft) of covered space within a site area of 15.1 acres and is constructd from
brick with facia cladding to blend in with the factory built in 1968.
Production at the Dereham factoryu covers road tankers in alloy, mild steel and stainless steel, powder tanks including tip and blow models, alloy-bodied, steel-chassis tipping trailers which are claimed to lead the industry in terms of "in-built" tipping stability, and a range of specialised trailers and drawbar units.
A second factory at North Walsham, Norfolk, produced platform trailers, skeletal trailers, curtainsiders, dry freight and refrigerated vans.
CF made record profits in 1988 on a turnover of £100m and forecasts continued growth through 1989.
