• A new lightweight ERF sixwheeler fitted with the all-steel Steyr cab could make an appearance in the UK before the end of 1989. Commercial Motor understands that the Sandbach-based truck builder is looking to use the Steyr cab on an existing E8 driveline featuring the Cummins 8.3-litre 6CTAA-265 charge-cooled engine driving an Eaton ninespeed synchromesh rangechange gearbox.
The all-steel Steyr cab is already offered by ERF on its 17-tonner chassis, badged as the ES6, as a lightweight alternative to ERF's plastic SP4 cab on the E6.
By using the Steyr unit on the E8 chassis, ERF could make significant weight savings over an SP4-cabbed sixwheeler. The current ES6 is 240kg lighter than an equivalent E6.
With a power output of around 183kW (245hp), and a peak torque of 954Nm (704 lbft), an 'ES8' rigid would be competing head-on with the latest Leyland Daf Constructor six-wheeler, as well as the Cummins-powered iveco Ford Cargo 6 x 4.
ERF already uses the 6CTAA air-to-air charge-cooled engine in its E8-265T 32-tonne tractive unit (tested by CM 29 September 1988).
If the plan to use the Steyr cab on the 6x4 chassis comes to fruition, the company could also decide to offer it on a tractor chassis.
ERF is looking at the possibility of using the 157kW (210hp) version of the Cummins B Series engine in its 17tonners. So far, the ES6 and E6 are restricted to the 126kW (169hp) charge-cooled Cummins 6BTA engine.
