• Public inquiry inspector Sir Richard Posnett has come down against Hampshire County Council's proposals to ban large buses from local services in the Hedge End area of Southampton.
The three-day public inquiry heard objections to the proposals from Solent Blue Line, Wilts & Dorset Bus Co and the National Federation of Bus Users. The county's proposed order would have limited the service to minibuses.
The inspector said he did not consider that large buses constituted a danger on the roads concerned. Minibuses would not be materially safer: a bus on a local service was not more dangerous than a similar bus on other duties, and the need for public transport outweighed the inconvenience to residents.
