• Over 70% of bus operators believe that the industry is becoming dominated by nationwide holding companies with thousands of buses in their fleets, according to a survey of over 100 PSV operators by accountants Peat Marwick McLintock.
Some 77% believe that competition will intensify during the next two years, and few expect new companies to appear.
Government claims that de regulation would boost competition are refuted by 86% of operators who believe that local monopolies will emerge via amalgamation. Most PSV firms questioned said that less than a quarter of their public bus services face serious competition.
Urban bus services have improved since deregulation, according to 61% of those questioned, but 42% believe rural services have deteriorated.
