AFORCEFUL exposition of the case for the road-haulage industry was made by speakers at a meeting of drivers, in London, on Monday, under the auspices of the Southern Metropolitan Sub-area of the Road Haulage Association. It was attended by some 500 drivers.
Major the Hon. Eric Long, T.D., j.P., chairman, emphasized the fact that the •meeting was non-political in character, and he impressed upon the audience that the industry's case must continue to be pushed forward. Appealing for the full support of every employer and employee in the industry, Mr. R.' W. Sewill declared that the railways had the avowed in• tention of killing completely the transport of goods by road. On the subject of taxation he pointed out that the road-user to-day pays a sum of .P..20,000,000 in excess of the complete annual cost of the roads, yet Sir Josiah Stamp had declared that the road industry was not paying its fair share in taxation.
On the question of read accidents, Mr. Norman Letts said that the record of the lorry, driver was one of which he may well be proud, only 2 per cent. of the toll of the road being attri
butable to heavy vehicles. The industry employed 1,250,006 men, and he claimed that this must represent approaching 3,00411,000 votes. Every vote must be used to ensure that no further restrictions are placed upon the driver's -tight to earn a living. This was a matter in which the trade unions could help.
Mr. F. G. Witcher, of the Transport and General Workers Union, in a fighting speech, said that organization should be the keynote of the industry. There must be no sides on this question, but teamwork by both employers and employed. Many questions were put by the audience, which left no doubt as to the driver's view on the present police persecution on the roads.
