DAIMLERCHRYSLER plans to launch its long-awaited Heavy Duty Engine Platform (HDEP) before the end of August.
Sources at Freightliner told CM at this year's Mid-America Trucking Show that the engine platform, rumoured to have been plagued by developmental problems, will be launched a few months after Freightliners new Class 8 truck, replacing the venerable Detroit Diesel Series 60 engine.
Both products were promoted heavily at the Mid-America show.
HDEP is critical to the entire DaimierChrysler truck group, as it will provide a platform for a global engine programme.
The common design platform will help meet European, Asian and NAFTA emissions standards -such as the 2007 and 2010 emissions stand ards in the US and the
yet-to-be-announced !wow
Euro-6 protocol as well as the need for higher ratings.
What remains unclear, however, are the displacements of the HDEP engine family.
It is thought that the 12 and the 14-litre unit are ready for market, but that the 15-litre a crucial size for the US market is likely to be delayed further.
