• VOSA's latest targeted check of vehicles using ports serving the Irish Sea has resulted in 173 UK-registered vehicles and 21 foreign registered vehicles receiving immediate prohibitions for roadworthiness defects.
The rate of prohibitions given to unroadworthy UK trucks-36.4%—was higher than the overall prohibition rate of 24% at routine roadside checks, says VOSA.
The check, which took place on May 15-18, involved a number of agencies who checked a total of 612 vehicles for roadworthiness and 575 vehicles for traffic offences.
The traffic enforcement check on UK-registered vehicles yielded 21 vehicles which received prohibitions for overloading, 52 for breaches of drivers' hours regulations and nine for defective speed limiters.
Of the 196 foreign-registered vehicles seen, 89, or 45,4%, were issued with traffic enforcement prohibitions; 21 for overloading, 33 for drivers' hours, 26 for drivers' records and nine for other offences.
Bob Tatchell, operations director for VOSA, adds: "These results show how effective we are at targeting the noncompliant operator using information gained through VOSA's intelligence network. We will continue to work with colleagues from other agencies to make sure that the roads are safe for all road users."
