• The Transport Tribunal has turned down the appeal of Transitex Export Service Ltd., Turton, near Bolton, against the North Western deputy Licensing Authority refusal to grant a B licence for four artics conditioned: "Goods to and from ferry ports either on licensee's or licensee's customers' trailers". At the hearing it was said that what the appellant really wanted to do was to send its own tractive units on through journeys to and from the Continent.
The deputy LA had decided a prima fade case had not been made out and that he could not exercise his discretion in favour of an otherwise weak case just because that would save foreign currency and be a form of "Backing Britain".
It was argued before the Tribunal that the potential benefits to be obtained from the operation of the appellant's vehicles on the Continent had been ignored, but the Tribunal considered no case had been made for use of tractive units in this country; the LA could only exercise his discretion over the carrying of goods in England, Wales and Scotland,
