DaimlerChrysler has added two self-steering trailer axles to its Discos range and has widened the range of compatible suspension systems.
The disc-braked axles, unveiled at the Kortrijk Trailer 2001 Show, are the TL4 and I L5. Both feature a new cab-operated locking mechanism with a pneumatic spring bellow reset system. Low maintenance levels are helped by the use of "sealed for life" wheel bearing cartridges and fully-enclosed kingpin bearings.
Both are rated at nine tonnes and are offered with a choice of track widths-2,040, . 1 2,095 and 2,140mm. The --, TL4 disc brakes have small callipers, designed to be used with 19.5in or 22.0in wheels. The slightly heavier TL5 has a completely new braking setup with a 22.5in diameter disc and a new calliper with brake wear sensing. The basic TL5 axle weighs 549kg, and between 704 and 716kg fully assembled with Hendrickson HT250 suspension.
The Discos range can now be specified with air suspension from the Dutch Weweler company. Weweler has an eight-model range of under or over-axle designs, including versions for low deck high-cube trailers and high ground clearance tippers.
