• A haulier who thought an operator's licence came with the vehicle he had hired, which he then overloaded, has been fined a total of £1,300 by West Bromwich Magistrates. Burnley-based Wootton & Co pleaded guilty by letter to both offences, claiming it was under the impression the licence came with the vehicle, The offence had been picked up at check by the Vehicle Inspectorate at Perry Bar services on the M6. When weighed, the front axle was Found to be 37% overloaded, said Malcolm Seward, prosecuting.
In its letter, Wootton said: "We have been in business for more than 10 years with an unblemished record." There was no explanation of the overloading offence. The driver, Darren Rawlinson of Le Moors, Accrington, Lana, was fined £300 with £65 costs for overloading.
At the same court, West Midlands firm WG Metals was fined £500 for operating a 7.5-tonner without an 0-licence after the owner's son, Simon Williamson, was caught at the same roadside Check.
